For Brigit's Flame, November Week 2, prompt "key". This grew all out of proportion to itself, and I actually only posted about the first half on BF, because we're supposed to keep the wordcount relatively low.
I really liked this one. :D I also, I think, have about three other stories of varying lengths in the bunnyhutch for these guys. Some of which might get written tonight, for Nanocount. >_>
Warnings for...language, mostly. These guys are their scifi/fantasy equivalent of miners or oil rig workers. They swear! A lot!
"The invention of the first transdimensional Gate was a grave disappointment to its creators. The dimensional milieux was vastly more complex than anticipated, and all the current theories of dimensional structure were woefully inadequate to describe--let alone allow humans to traverse safely--the transdimensional landscape. What lay beyond the Gates was named simply 'the Flux' for the incomprehensibly vast ebb and flow of information that even the most advanced computers--let alone the human brain--could not interpret. "However, the Flux was rich with a multidimensional particlewave that was eventually dubbed 'quine'. It did not take long for the budding field of dimensional physicists to devise a method of converting quine into the more familiar arcanos energy that had fueled everything from human life-patterns to utilitarian spellforms to galactic exploration. The systematic harvesting of quine through pinprick Gates situated on naturally-occurring dimensional nodes quickly boomed into a multi-trillion credit industry. "Nevertheless, this seemingly limitless energy came at a cost. Unpredictable Flux-surges through the Gates were common and occasionally overran all containment efforts within the harvesting facilities, leading to property destruction and loss of life through dimensional translocation. Additionally, the first harvesting teams learned another important lesson about the Flux: it was not unoccupied, and its denizens were as incomprehensible and dangerous as the Flux itself...." -- Barrowman Thane, Through the Gates: A Transdimensional History
He ran, the jagged rocks of the passage pounding into his feet even through the thick soles of his boots. His pack was still on his back, bouncing a bit on his shoulders, but he couldn't take the time to shrug it off. He just kept going, his breath ragged in his lungs, his mind ticking away the seconds. 61... 62... 63.... ( Read more... )

So, someone introduced me to the Brigit's Flame comm over on LJ. It's a pretty cool writing game/laid back origfic contest/weekly prompt comm, and I've been in it for the November run. So far I've got two stories up (under the journal reed_pen, because...I dunno, though it's not a really fandom-centered challenge, I wanted to do the clean-start thing). I'm gonna repost them here, because I think they're pretty good, even if they are of the "omg write write write DEADLINE OMG" lineage.
This one was for the Week 1 prompt "china". I, of course, got caught up by the fact that "bone china"...uses actual bone ash.
Warnings for this: there's description of ritual cannibalism of the dead, and other um INTERESTING ways of dealing with a dead body. I normally wouldn't worry about that, but one of my concrit editors for the week was evidently so disturbed that sie told me about five times in as many paragraphs how disturbing, gross, and creepy sie found it. (...there was this point in the story, kinda...about different cultures and how their rituals are different but equal...? :shrugs:

The sward tower bells tolled a funeral peal the first day of Ateph's apprenticeship. Elen had paused in the process of mixing a new batch of clay, turning to look out the shop door, towards the tower. "Old Taipha," he said, at Ateph's questioning look. "She and her husband owned the bakery, years ago. She would give me broken cookies from the ovens when I was little." He turned back to kneading the clay under his hands smooth. "Peace, old mother." Did you like Diablo? Then there is $20 worth of love over here with your name on it. There's a free 2-hr demo, too, which gives a nice taste. Though I'm sure the game devs hate the comparison, this is really, honestly, a really nice Diablo clone. ( Moar here. )
I just finished playing that two hours rather than...working on Nano writing. >_> I'm...getting kind of burned out? This is way more writing than I've done in a long time. Also, someone remind me later to post up all the origfic stuff I'm pounding out for Brigit's Flame on LJ.... First week I was firmly in the middle of the voting pack, and I managed to squick out one of the people who was assigned to give concrit! ^_^;; ( tl;dr )
I am also...very behind on Nano. I had a lot of late nights this week that ate away at my writing time, and then...just a bit burned out. But, I don't have much of anything I plan to do this weekend, (and you will NOT spend the whole weekend playing Torchlight, self, WILL NOT) so I'm hoping to get a big whacking chunk of writing done. I have the words...I just wish that I could hook up my brain and download them without having to go through the typing step. ;P
That said, I'm going to go transcribe what I DID manage to write today, then...head to bed. So I can be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed to go do lots of writing tomorrow! :D

Today's the last day to porn! So let's get it out of our system in a sweaty, heaving, writhing mess of pornification, and enjoy ourselves!
The battle ends tonight at Midnight EST. I'll accept prompts that come in for about half an hour afterward if it's obvious they're timing mistakes, but after that, that's it.
Let's get writing!
